"I did not immediately return to my father's house. But instead hiked a familiar path into the foothills where I might relish the quiet for a spell. It is a silence unlike any other and has a distinct way of causing a man to lose all sense of himself, as well as time and space. I think a few weeks must have passed before I did finally return to my father's house. But I can never be entirely certain."
